I recently watched a video of a female who has earned a black belt in Karate. States the female has over 10 years of training and faces off with just a regular guy off the street with no prior training at all. It was not a nice video to watch as the female did not do very well. I know, there are lots of factors that need to be considered such as weight or strength. These factors will shape the outcome of the fight. At Empower Academy we do not teach or train in any self-defense or hand to hand fighting techniques. With that being said, Empower Academy has never said that it is not needed or beneficial to learn and become proficient in some form of self-defense. Allow me to explain why EA does have self-defense in our curriculum and would love to hear your thoughts as well on this topic.

Just in case this is the first time you are reading anything about Empower Academy, I'll start with explaining my theory. Its rather simple; "The best way to avoid becoming a victim, is to avoid becoming the target". Lets call "X" the site or location, or the event in which a person becomes the victim. The parking garage at 2 am, the bathroom in the back of the gas station off some random exit on a long road trip, college dorm room or that little bridge in the local park your run takes you under every morning. These all have the potential to be the "X". We support training in all martial arts as they teach individuals great skills that all individuals need to be successful in life. Leadership, work ethic and discipline to list a few. If my daughter is using these self-defense skills or martial arts well that means she is on the X. Which at Empower Academy we consider that a loss and she already is a victim. Maybe with the grace of God, my daughter is able to fight off the man, that attacked her from behind, hiding between two cars in the garage. Even after a couple drinks, late at night in high heels she "wins". Again, at Empower Academy we consider that a loss. She maybe won on the X, but she still walks away with the trauma from that attack and all that comes with that trauma for the rest of her life. Trauma that studies show, can get passed on to the next generation.

EA strongly agrees that self-defense or martial arts are beneficial and important, but they are not the solution. The solution lies where we would call in Special Forces, left of X or left of Boom. We look at the solution like medicine. We are not trying to treat anything at Empower Academy, our medicine is preventative. For decades Green Berets have been operating all over the world. Countries that there is no war or conflict currently going on. So, the option of using a weapon to maintain their personal security and the security of their team is not available. Operations that a confrontation or engagement with an adversary could mean mission failure. Special Forces have refined and polished skills that enable them to identify potential threats and high threat areas in order to plan for or avoid. We at Empower Academy take these skills and techniques, proven over decades of real-world experience, and empower these young women. Empower them with the knowledge and ability to apply these same skills and techniques that will not just keep them off the X but enable them to identify the X before leaving the house.

Would love to hear your thoughts or experience on this topic. Do you feel young women today should be have the opportunity to learn these skills and techniques?
