You just finished shopping at Bradlees and walking to the car you discover a flat tire. A man appears, offering to change it for you.

"I didn't have a flat tire when i arrived and parked"

"Where did he come from? It's freezing outside, why is he out here?"

"Why does he want to change my tire?"

Julie Ashe was a kind and compassionate young woman with a big heart. That evening, she gratefully accepted his help, and when he finished changing the tire and asked for a ride to the gas station, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse. It was a cold night, and he had just done her a favor.

"Where is his car?"
"What is wrong with the car?"
"Why does he need to go to gas station?"
"How long has he been out here?"
"Is it even appropriate?"

Julie Ashe tragically lost her life that night. Her kindness and big heart made her vulnerable, as she couldn’t bring herself to refuse a man who had just helped her with a flat tire. Her willingness to trust ultimately cost her life.

Target Prevention Route

We teach how to detect being under surveillance because surveillance is a key phase in the targeting cycle of a planned attack. Before an assault, kidnapping, or robbery occurs, the attacker often conducts surveillance to gather information, identify routines, and assess vulnerability. If a student can recognize this phase, they have the power to disrupt the entire attack before it begins.

Provide you the tools to recognize danger signs early, while you still have the time, space, and options to avoid the attack altogether.

If you miss the signs, you're forced to react after the attack begins, which is a much more dangerous and uncertain situation.

When a potential target shows awareness, unpredictability, and deliberate counter-surveillance behavior, it signals they are a hard target. Most attackers will move on to someone easier.

Spotting someone watching or following you gives you time to act - change your route, call for help,

or confront the behavior safely.
